Buegs’ 365 movies in 2019 (365 Movies in 356 Days) Day 189
Hello!! It is day 189 and I have watched 181 movies.
For whatever reason this last week has been a SLOG!! I think it’s the realization that I’m just now approaching the halfway point. I’ve seen a ton of movies so far and to know that there’s so many more to come is daunting. BUT, we’re over halfway home!!!
Some highlights from movies I’ve watched these last few weeks:
The Austin Powers Trilogy! – It had been SO LONG since I’d seen these films! With Mike Myers at the helm and appearances by: Elizabeth Hurley, Michael York, Mimi Rogers, Seth Green, Will Ferrell, Heather Graham, Rob Lowe, Mindy Sterling, Verne Troyer, and FREAKING BEYONCE just to name a few…. These movies were like a delicious treat from the past. It was fun to go down this farcical spy movie memory lane and have some giggles! Get the popcorn, settle in, prepare to laugh, and BEHAAAAAVE BABY!!!!
Aladdin – As we go farther down the path with Disney’s “live action” remakes we are entering into hallowed ground for me now. These movies all hold a special place in my heart, but Aladdin and The Lion King specifically were absolute pillars of my youth. So, I was a bit skeptical of this one before I went ( and honestly the trailers weren’t helping matters! ) but I must say that overall I was very impressed with this movie! It wasn’t an absolute shot for shot remake, but it really toed the line between being it’s own art piece while also not straying too far from a classic. I thought Will Smith was surprisingly good in a role that was so beautifully and masterfully done by Robin Williams. I thought that Jasmine played by Naomi Scott was particularly wonderful. She has a commanding presence and a beautiful voice. And I must say the changes they made to her story line are small…but they felt just right! Aladdin didn’t do a lot for me, particularly singing-wise, but it was still a very enjoyable night!
Tomb Raider – I think I talked about this one on a pod recently but I was surprised by how much I liked this Vikander vehicle. I thought she was really fun and smart and we obviously know she’s a great actor! Also, I will never not see a movie with Walton Goggins in it. The man is an absolute treasure! This was a fun action flick!
Toy Story 4 – WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MOVIE. I had my doubts because I thought the last one ended the trilogy and series on such a perfect note, but they still had more story to tell and I thank the world for letting them tell it. It is beautiful (THE ANIMATION IS INSANE THESE DAYS), everything is perfect, and I couldn’t be happier to watch this a couple times a year for the rest of time.
The Rolling Thunder Revue – A story of Bob Dylan shot in a sort of Documentary style for Netflix. This one was weird. Apparently, not all the shots/characters/plot points are factual and this is a sort of hazy psychedelic fever dream amalgamation of fact/fiction. The music is clearly great and it’s a fun watch if not always straightforward. Definitely see this one if you like Dylan!
Dark Phoenix – The last foray into the X-Men catalogue before the whole MCU is once again reunited (with a few notable exceptions) under the Disney umbrella. This movie is…pretty good…but I found myself thinking about what a waste it is to have these actors and to have them be so darned good at their craft and these characters but to have the story be so lacking. I can’t wait to see how they recast and implement these characters alongside the Avengers and Friends. I would presume we’ll have to wait at least a while as they let this leave the collective consciousness. It’s not a bad story, but for my money they’re missing the grand scope of the MCU and the deft hand of Kevin Feige. Time will tell as we get closer what’s going to happen with the X-Men and with The Fantastic Four and I for one, cannot wait!!!
That’s all for this week, I’ll be back with some more movies soon! Also, HAPPY 4th of JULY!! Be safe, be friendly, and as always…be indoors.
